The legacy of the Toyota 4Runner extends all the way back to 1984 when the first of these vehicles was introduced. This original design featured a vehicle that combined four-wheel versatility with two seats, a fiberglass top that could be removed, and a no-frills type of design that resembled more of a pickup truck than anything else. Things changed much more drastically with the introduction of the second generation in 1990, which saw the 4Runner transform into an SUV with rear seating, a single-body design, and the option to choose between either a 4-cylinder engine of a V6 variant. How did the third and fourth generation 4Runner stack up?
